Shepherdstown House Histories

Entler Hotel

We are in the process of putting together information on each property in Shepherdstown, and building deed chains — lists of owners and dates — as we have time. This is a very long-term project. If you would like us to work with you on a history of your property, please contact us. And if you have a deed chain or history you would like to donate, we’d be very grateful! You can view an Index of properties by lot number and address. (It’s a work in progress.) The index will tell you if we have a deed chain for the property, and if so, how far back it goes, and gives surnames of previous owners. (Current owners are not listed to protect their privacy.) The address links to Google StreetView, if available. Please contact us if you would like to obtain copies of what we have about your property. Research fees may apply.

We are attempting to complete all the deed chains back to the original land grant in 1734 and to include a link to every deed in the chain, if available online. We also try to include wills when property is passed down that way, and a link to the original land grant. Our county clerk’s office has a good many of the deeds online but in cases where a deed can’t be found, we look for them on FamilySearch.org, where it’s free to view deeds if you sign up for a free account. Each deed entry includes the date of the deed, book and page number in the county records, the grantor(s) and grantee(s), a property description, and the link to the deed (or other document). The deed chain template will give you an idea of the format of the deed chain.
